The US State Department has warned its citizens of the possibility of terrorist attacks in Syria during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, noting that attacks could target embassies, international organizations, and public institutions in Damascus.

In a statement, the department said it had "raised the alert level to Level 4," the highest level, urging its citizens not to travel to Syria "due to increased security risks."

The statement read: "The anticipated attacks could involve several methods, such as individual attacks, shootings, or the use of explosive devices. This warning remains in effect due to the increased security risks, including terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, hostage-taking, armed conflict, and unjust detention."
