Riot erupted in some wings of Adra Central Prison in Damascus countryside

Media sources reported today an attempted riot in some wings of Adra Central Prison in the Damascus countryside, with the aim of seizing control of the priso

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that heavy gunfire was heard around the prison, with the cause still unknown. The Observatory added that "reports have been conflicting regarding the incident, ranging from an attempted prison break to gunfire from outside."

Adra Central Prison houses approximately 2,000 prisoners, including military personnel and officers from the former Ba'ath regime who have returned from Iraq.

This comes at a time when "thousands of detainees continue to be detained without clear trials or transparency regarding the charges against them," according to the Observatory, which stated "the need to reveal the fate of more than 8,000 detainees in Adra, Hama, and Harem prisons, more than 100 days after their arrest, amid concern about escalating violations inside prisons, including torture and systematic killing."
