UN Security Council condemns crimes in Syrian coast

The United Nations Security Council has adopted a joint statement presented by the United States and Russia, condemning the large-scale massacres in the Syrian coastal region and calling on the Damascus authority to take measures to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The Security Council approved the statement on "widespread violence in the Syrian coast," urging the Damascus authority to protect all Syrians regardless of ethnicity or religion.

According to Reuters, the draft statement on Syria was officially adopted today, Friday, during an open session of the Security Council. In the statement, the Security Council called for "an immediate cessation of all acts of violence and incitement in Syria" and stressed "the importance of the UN’s role in supporting a Syrian-led political transition process."

The Council also urged all countries to respect Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, and to refrain from interfering in its internal affairs.

The statement called on the Damascus authority to take further measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
