US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Ambassador Barrack will continue to play a leadership role within President Donald Trump’s administration on the Syria and Iraq files, even though his official title of “special envoy” has formally ended.

Rubio explained in a post on the platform “X” that Barrack “played an invaluable role as special envoy to Syria,” adding that the designation will be discontinued, but he will continue his duties within the administration’s team.

He noted that Barrack will continue working on the Syrian and Iraqi files, drawing on his experience and connections to support what he described as the “America First” agenda.

Barrack, the US ambassador to Turkey, was appointed in May 2025 as special envoy to Syria, as part of Washington’s efforts to reshape its policy toward Damascus and lift sanctions on it.
