Thousands celebrate Newroz, stress need for unity, strengthening democracy

Large celebrations were held across Rojava and in several Syrian cities, as residents of Derik, Girkê Legê, and Kobani, along with Kurds in the capital Damascus and residents of Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo, marked the occasion in an atmosphere of enthusiasm under the slogan:

“Let us make Newroz a holiday for the freedom of Leader Apo and Kurdish democratic unity.”

The celebrations carried several key messages, foremost among them the call to achieve the physical freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan and to work toward consolidating Kurdish democratic unity.

In Kobani, where tens of thousands gathered, the celebration was held on Tel Mishta Noor, with participants stressing the demand for leader Ocalan’s physical freedom and the need to hold a Kurdish national conference aimed at unifying Kurdish ranks across the four parts of Kurdistan, given the sensitive stage the region is going through.

In Girkê Legê, the village of Haliq witnessed a large public turnout, where participants stressed the importance of rallying all segments of society around the Autonomous Administration, considering the twenty-first century to be the century of Kurdish unity and Newroz a day of freedom and protection of achievements.

In Derik, the celebration was held in Martyr Jîçek Square, where participants said that the recognition of Newroz as an official day in Syria after one hundred years is one of the results of the Kurdish people’s struggle, which has made them an influential force in the Middle East.

In the capital Damascus, where a celebration was held for the first time in Project Dummar at Al-Fayhaa Stadium near the Cardiac Surgery Hospital, a clear message emerged that Kurds are advocates of peace and democracy and seek to build a free homeland for all Syrians while respecting their cultures, languages, and history.

As for the celebrations in Qamishlo, Hasakah, Darbasiyah, and Tirbespiyê, they were postponed until March 24 at 11:00 a.m., and will be held at the previously designated locations.
