TEV-DEM: Constitutional declaration lacks national representation

 In a statement issued today, TEV-DEM firmly rejected the declaration, reaffirming the unity and solidarity of all Syrians in shaping their shared future based on the principle that Syria belongs to all its people, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or sect.

 The statement read," Following the fall of the former Ba'athist regime, the Syrian people, in all their diverse components, rejoiced at the collapse of tyranny—a regime that had, for the past fourteen years, been the subject of a popular uprising against dictatorship and its oppressive and inhumane practices.

 However, this hope was short-lived, as a new form of authoritarianism quickly emerged. Yesterday, in Damascus, an announcement was made regarding what has been termed the "Interim Constitutional Declaration." This declaration bears a striking resemblance to the same standards and principles that were enforced during the era of the racist Ba'athist regime.

 This declaration does not reflect the spirit and culture of the Syrian people in all their diversity—Kurds, Syriacs, Assyrians, Christians, and even Sunni Arabs, the majority of whom embrace moderate Islam.

 We categorically reject this Constitutional Declaration and reaffirm the unity of all Syrians. We call for their solidarity in forging a collective future based on the principle that Syria belongs to all its citizens, without imposing a singular ethnic, religious, or sectarian identity. Syria needs the cooperation of all its people to establish peace and build a democratic society through inclusive Syrian participation that strengthens national unity.

 We further stress that this newly declared constitution lacks national diversity and fails to ensure meaningful national participation.

Consequently, this Constitutional Declaration reflects an exclusionary and authoritarian mindset, serving merely as an extension of the past dictatorships against which the Syrian people—Arabs, Kurds, and all other components—have risen.
