Syriac Union Party: Constitutional declaration fuels instability

The Syriac Union Party in Syria issued a statement today following the issuance of the "Constitutional Declaration" by the authorities in Damascus. The statement reads as follows: "In a new move by the interim government in Damascus, and as part of the ongoing marginalization and exclusion of Syria’s diverse communities, the head of the transitional phase in Syria issued the Constitutional Declaration on March 13. This declaration aligns with the prevailing ideology of the ruling authority and perpetuates the principles of the former Assad regime, disregarding the aspirations of the Syrian people and the objectives of their revolution for change toward democracy, justice, and respect for both individual and collective human rights. It undermines national pluralism and advances a monolithic identity for Syria while enforcing a rigidly centralized system of governance."

 The Syriac Union Party further stated: "This Constitutional Declaration represents an announcement of a period of instability rather than a genuine step toward the necessary transitional phase in Syria. The transition must focus on confidence-building, fostering civil peace, and implementing transitional justice through genuine participation of all components of Syrian society. This should ensure their political, social, and economic rights within a Syrian state that embraces its multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-religious identity. The Syrian people are composed of Arabs, Kurds, Syriac-Assyrians, Christians, Muslims, Yazidis, and others. The state must remain neutral regarding religion and ethnicity while preserving its unity, sovereignty, and independence under a decentralized democratic system with an inclusive national identity."
