Tensions in Homs after factions seize religious shrine and historic fortress

The takeover by forces affiliated with Syria’s interim government of a religious shrine and a historic fortress in the village of Balqasa in the Homs countryside has sparked anger among residents and locals, amid fears that sacred, religious, and historical sites could be turned into military positions.

ANHA correspondent in the city of Homs reported that forces of Syria’s interim government had taken control of the shrine of Sheikh Ahmad al-Jazari and the adjacent fortress in the village of Balqasa, triggering a state of tension and public anger.

Local sources said that a new commander had arrived in the area, known as “Abu al-Baraa,” whom residents accused of pressuring them and stirring up problems within the village.

The sources indicated that the commander began field measures two days ago aimed at imposing control over the archaeological and religious site, including the fortress and the shrine of Sheikh Ahmad al-Jazari.

Forces of the interim government also brought additional military reinforcements to the area, converted the fortress into a military outpost, and erected fortifications around it.

These developments have raised concerns among local residents that their sacred religious sites could be transformed into military positions, which could lead to repercussions for stability in the area.

No official authority has yet issued a statement clarifying the circumstances of what took place or defining the nature of the military presence in the village.
