Tensions escalate between al-Bakir, al-Mashahda tribes following killing of young man in Markada

Residents of the Deir ez-Zor countryside are experiencing a state of tension following the killing  of Hamoud Othman al-Daher, a resident of the Deir ez-Zor countryside, several days ago, after a dispute broke out in Markada town in southern Hasakah countryside on August 8. Tensions have since escalated between members of the al-Bakir and al-Mashahda tribes.

Al-Daher was from Tayeb al-Fal village in the northern Deir ez-Zor countryside and was killed following a dispute with another person in Markada. However, other local sources said he was from al-Sajir village in the Deir ez-Zor countryside.

The dispute escalated at the time into the use of firearms in the town, leaving al-Daher seriously wounded. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, tensions between the families of the two sides gradually escalated, reaching their peak on Wednesday, as the al-Bakir tribe is demanding that those accused of the killing be handed over, according to statements and circulating local sources.

Local notables from the al-Bakir tribe said in posts that the victim was Hamoud Othman al-Daher and linked his killing to individuals from the al-Mashahda tribe in the Markada area.

This coincided with the emergence of video recordings showing groups of al-Bakir tribesmen, amid a state of heightened alert and tension. This raised fears among residents that the incident could develop into a broader tribal conflict, particularly as calls for revenge and retaliation continued to circulate.

The al-Bakir and al-Mashahda tribes both belong to the Arab Aqidat (Akidat) tribal confederation and are connected by kinship ties that are traditionally described in tribal terms as cousins, as both are branches of the same tribe.

The al-Bakir tribe is predominantly concentrated in the northern Deir ez-Zor countryside, parts of the Khabur region and southern Hasakah, while members of the al-Mashahda tribe are spread across several areas of the Jazira and Euphrates regions, including Markada and its countryside.
