Syrian writer accuses Turkey of obstructing March 10 Agreement

A Syrian writer believes that Turkey’s escalation of its interference in Syrian affairs aims to expand its influence and obstruct any internal Syrian understandings. She considers Turkey’s stance on the March 10 Agreement to be part of a broader effort to strip the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of their special status, while exploiting the transitional government to serve its regional agenda.

Syrian political writer Mays Kraydi spoke about developments in the Syrian scene following the fall of the Baathist regime and the growing role of Turkey in directly intervening in paths of understanding among Syrian parties, particularly in sensitive political and security files.

She argued that Turkey is moving forward with the implementation of its expansionist project in Syria, relying on its occupation of Syrian cities and regions, and seeking to expand its influence toward other areas, reaching the coast due to its strategic and economic importance, especially with regard to ports and energy routes.

Kraydi explained that Turkey follows a policy of procrastination and exploits agreements mainly to buy time, within a mechanism aimed at rehabilitating the transitional government in Syria, as a prelude to a broader project intersecting with regional and international changes.

She stressed that Turkey obstructs any path that limits its expansionist policies or curbs its influence.

She noted that Turkey views Syria as a field of regional influence and seeks through it to secure an advanced position for the political Islam project, emphasizing that Ankara’s policies stem from the agenda of the Justice and Development Party rather than from the interests of Syrians.

Kraydi pointed out that Turkey works to dismantle the political and military structures of Syrian components in stages and seeks to empty any comprehensive national project of its substance. She said: “The Syrian Democratic Forces are among the main targets of this plan, as Ankara does not accept the existence of any independent Syrian component and relies on factions affiliated with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham as tools to implement its agenda.”

She stressed that confronting the Turkish project requires the crystallization of a Syrian national stance that protects the diversity of components and rejects the use of international agreements to impose unilateral governance models serving external agendas. She affirmed that adherence to the principle of partnership and political federalism constitutes a fundamental guarantee for stability.

Kraydi indicated that the transitional government, in terms of ideology and practice, constitutes a tool in Ankara’s hands to implement its plans inside Syria, within its efforts to fill any potential regional vacuum and revive its Ottoman project in a new form.

Regarding the repeated statements and handling by Turkish officials of the March 10 Agreement, and the pressure to integrate the Syrian Democratic Forces into the forces of the transitional government, she confirmed that their essence is “the disarmament of the Syrian Democratic Forces in favor of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.”

Since March 10 of this year, the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria has been seeking to implement the agreement concluded between the leadership of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the transitional government. However, talks between the two sides remain stagnant, with many of its provisions still suspended.

Observers believe this is due to procrastination and evasion by the transitional government on the one hand, and external interference on the other.
