Syrian Women's Council in Aleppo calls on women to unite

Dozens of representatives from political parties, civil institutions, women's movements, and organizations gathered at the Al-Jabanat Square in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood of Aleppo to participate in a statement issued by the Syrian Women's Council today (December 25).

In the statement, read by Rawa Bakir, the Administrative Officer of the Relations Committee in the Syrian Women's Council, reference was made to the more than decade-long Syrian crisis, during which the Syrian people endured successive hardships and crises, including economic deterioration, violations, arrests, and widespread chaos under the criminal Ba'ath regime.

The statement added: "After the fall of the previous regime and as Syrians celebrated the downfall of this authoritarian system, hoping for security and peace to prevail in the country, we now see that there are those who seek to destabilize the situation, engage in destructive acts, and ignite sectarian strife that sows discord among the people."

The statement pointed to incidents provoking strife, such as kidnappings in Aleppo, the burning of a Christmas tree in Hama, and the distribution of approximately 300 religious garments (khimar) to women in Aleppo, which raised concerns among Syrians in a country known for its cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity.

The statement warned that "these actions will lead the country into darkness," explaining: "As we enter this new phase, and to successfully overcome it, we must stand together and work to unify ranks to confront all these practices."

The statement called on the concerned parties working to establish peace and security to act immediately and fulfill their role in confronting these destructive acts that undermine stability and security, and to stand against the violations affecting all segments of the population.
