Syrian justice minister meets Iraqi chief justice in Damascus

Iraqi Chief Justice Faiq Zidan arrived in Damascus at the head of a judicial delegation as part of a visit that both sides said aims to explore prospects for judicial cooperation between Syria and Iraq and strengthen communication between the two countries’ justice institutions.

The Iraqi delegation was received by its Syrian counterpart. Zidan and the accompanying delegation then met with Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais, during which, according to the Syrian Ministry of Justice, they discussed “ways to develop judicial and legal cooperation and exchange expertise and experience between the justice institutions of the two countries.”

According to the ministry, al-Wais expressed Syria’s hope that the progress made in economic and security relations with Iraq would serve as an impetus for strengthening judicial and legal coordination and developing channels of communication between the institutions concerned with justice in the two countries.

Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais said his country is keen to build balanced and positive relations with its neighbors based on mutual respect and shared interests. He noted that the historical ties and mutual interests between Syria and Iraq make the two countries better positioned, and in greater need, to develop bilateral cooperation across various fields, particularly in the judicial sector.

For his part, Zidan affirmed that the Iraqi judiciary is keen to open new avenues for cooperation with Syria in a way that contributes to developing judicial work, strengthening coordination between justice institutions, and upholding the rule of law in both countries.

The Iraqi Chief Justice stressed the importance of enhancing coordination between judicial institutions and exchanging expertise and experience in a way that strengthens joint cooperation and contributes to improving judicial performance in both countries.
