Syrian interim govt's war on neighborhoods in Aleppo exposes its contradictions

The Ministry of Defense of the Syrian interim government announced the complete withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from Aleppo, heading toward the eastern Euphrates in a second convoy, under the supervision of the “Ministry of Defense,” on April 9 of last year.

It stated in a post on the X platform, as reported by the interim government’s news agency, that “the departure of the second convoy of the Syrian Democratic Forces from the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods toward the eastern Euphrates is taking place under the supervision of the Ministry of Defense and the General Security Forces.”

It added that the first convoy had withdrawn a few days earlier, just one day after a prisoner exchange between the “Internal Security in Aleppo” and the SDF, which saw the “cleansing of prisons” with the release of approximately 250 detainees.

Today, however, the same ministry claims that SDF positions in the two neighborhoods are legitimate targets for the ongoing shelling since yesterday afternoon, revealing the contradictions in its narrative. In a statement published a short while ago by the government agency, it officially declared war on the neighborhoods.

The neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and Bani Zeid in Aleppo, Syria, are being subjected to shelling with artillery, rockets, and heavy weapons, which so far has resulted in the martyrdom of 7 civilians and injuries to 49 others. Reports also indicate damage to around 150 homes.
