The Syrian Initiative for the Freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan issued today a condolence message on the passing of the artist Ziad Rahbani. The text read:

"With deep sorrow and grief, the Syrian Initiative for the Freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan extends its heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathies to the honorable Rahbani family and to the lady of Arabic singing, Madame Fairuz, on the death of her son, the great artist Ziad Rahbani, whose passing represents a great loss to the world of art and music.

In this painful moment, we respectfully recall his sincere feelings towards the Kurdish cause when, in 2000, he composed his musical piece entitled ‘Amed – Diyarbakir,’ which he presented with his mother, the ambassador of peace and harmony, Madame Fairuz, at the Tripoli Festival in 2010. This was a dedication from him to the Kurdish revolution and an expression of deep appreciation for the Kurdish people's struggle.

Leader Abdullah Ocalan held Madame Fairuz’s singing in great esteem and had a profound love for her voice, which he considered an echo of the free spirit and human conscience.

Our condolences and sympathies go to the honorable Rahbani family and all the admirers of the artist Ziad Rahbani, who will remain present in the cultural and revolutionary conscience of the peoples of the Middle East.

Peace be upon the soul of the deceased, and patience and solace to his loved ones."

The song “Diyarbakir” is one of Ziad Rahbani’s works, featured in the album Eh Fi Amal which he released for Fairuz in 2010 after a long hiatus from artistic activity. The song is an instrumental musical piece without lyrics.
