June 14 marks the 111th anniversary of the Sayfo Massacres committed by the Ottoman authorities against Armenians, Syriacs, Assyrians, and Chaldeans in 1915.

In remembrance of the victims, the Virgin Mary Church in Tirbespiyê held prayers for the souls of those who lost their lives. Speeches were also delivered, including one on behalf of the Syriac Union Party by Eshou Kourieh, who highlighted the objectives of those massacres and the Ottoman attempts to exterminate the indigenous peoples of the region.

Representing the church, Deacon Gabriel Asmar delivered a speech in which he noted that the Syriac, Chaldean, Assyrian, and Armenian peoples had been subjected to historical massacres. He called for peace to prevail in the region, for religious conflicts to end, and for all communities to live together in coexistence.

The commemoration concluded with a candlelight march by members of the Syriac community through the central market of Tirbespiyê in honor of the victims of the massacres.
