Syriac Union Party: SDF-Damascus agreement step towards establishing national dialogue

The Syriac Union Party issued a statement following the signing of the agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Damascus, stating: "This agreement is a positive step towards establishing dialogue and understanding among Syrians and confronting conspiracies and sedition among various Syrian communities. It represents a true and correct beginning for the Syrian government towards resolving all outstanding issues and files in Syria, leading to a sound and strong foundation for all Syrian institutions, in which all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic and religious affiliations, participate, and whose rights are protected in accordance with the new Syrian constitution."

In the statement, the party emphasized "its commitment to the importance and necessity of taking strong steps toward implementing the provisions of the agreement, as well as toward forming the necessary institutions for the transitional phase with the participation of representatives of all Syrian components. It also emphasized that Syria receives the necessary international support for reconstruction, the return of all displaced persons and refugees, and the removal of all sanctions imposed on Syria."

The statement explained: "We find the aforementioned agreement incomplete and does not express the aspirations and rights of the Syriac-Assyrian component as an authentic Syrian component from which Syria takes its name. This is not included in the agreement, despite the participation of the Syriac Union Party and Syriac component institutions in the structure of the Autonomous Administration, the SDF, and the SDC since its inception."

The party noted that it "has been and continues to struggle for a free, democratic Syria in which all Syrians enjoy full national, religious, and equal citizenship rights. The party also works for constitutional recognition of the rights of the Syriac-Assyrian community and to end a long era of marginalization, denial, and persecution to which our people have been subjected since the founding of the Syrian state. This is despite their positive contributions to building Syria and their role in all political, economic, and social spheres alongside their brethren in the homeland. During the years of the Syrian revolution, they have made great sacrifices in confronting the dictatorial regime and the terrorist organization ISIS. The Syrian situation cannot be complete, and stability cannot be achieved without achieving fair equality in rights and duties among all Syrians. Together, we can build a unified and strong Syria that protects its people and preserves their individual and collective rights."

In the statement, the Syriac Union Party called on "all our Syriac people, both abroad and at home, to fulfill their historical duty to defend their existence and cause and to establish their rights and historical identity in their homeland, Syria."
