Syriac Union Party condemns Sqelbiya events, calls for urgent measures to enhance stability

In a written statement issued today, the Syriac Union Party’s executive body denounced the attacks that targeted residents and their property in Sqelbiya on the night of Friday, March 27.

The statement indicated that the events began with the involvement of Internal Security Forces, which carried out arrests of several young men from the city who had confronted the attackers.

It warned of the seriousness of these developments, stating that they aim to drag the city into sectarian conflict that could extend across Syria, particularly amid repeated incidents of threats and provocations in areas with a distinct Christian character.

The party called on the Syrian interim government to intervene and reconsider governance mechanisms in a way that respects the country’s pluralistic nature, ensures equal treatment of all components, strengthens participatory approaches in administrative, security, and service sectors, and amends the constitutional declaration to preserve national unity, in addition to holding accountable those who undermine security in a transparent and public manner.

It affirmed that Christians in Syria have always been and remain an integral part of the country’s social fabric, contributing to its development and committed to reinforcing coexistence and civil peace, stressing their right to be genuine partners in Syria’s future.

In conclusion, the executive body of the Syriac Union Party called for allowing members of the Christian community to join the Internal Security Forces and participate in protecting their areas in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, noting that such a step would enhance security and stability amid current challenges.
