Suspension of Ekrem Imamoğlu’s duties as Mayor of Istanbul
The Turkish Ministry of Interior announced that it has suspended Ekrem Imamoğlu from his position as Mayor of Istanbul after a court sentenced him to prison as part of a corruption investigation.
A statement issued by the ministry confirmed that “Ekrem Imamoğlu, Mayor of Greater Istanbul, has been suspended from his duties.”
Earlier today, a Turkish court approved the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu following a formal request by the Turkish Public Prosecutor.
Imamoğlu’s arrest this week has sharply escalated political tensions, leading to widespread protests across Turkey. Demonstrators gathered in multiple cities to express their opposition.
Turkish police had interrogated Imamoğlu for approximately five hours on Saturday, following a previous interrogation on Friday. He denied all charges against him during both questioning sessions.
