SOHR: 7 killed, including two Russian officers, in armed attack

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, citing "reliable" sources, reported that two officers from Russian forces were killed in an attack by gunmen believed to belong to ISIS cells in the Deir ez-Zor desert, which is under the control of Damascus government forces.

The Observatory noted that the attack, which took place the day before yesterday, occurred while they were in the desert, where the attackers used light and medium weapons. The operation took place after drone surveillance, amid Russian secrecy regarding the death of the two officers.

The Observatory pointed out that the attack resulted in the killing of seven people: two officers from Russian forces, two officers from Damascus government forces with the rank of "Brigadier General," in addition to three members of Damascus government forces.

According to the Observatory’s documentation, the death toll from military attacks in the Syrian desert has reached 564 since the beginning of 2024. These include 57 civilians, including two children, 460 members of Damascus government forces and affiliated groups, and 47 ISIS fighters. These individuals were killed in 197 attacks by ISIS cells across different parts of the desert, through ambushes, armed attacks, and bombings in the Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and Homs deserts.

Most of these attacks occurred in the Deir ez-Zor and Homs deserts.
