A large fire broke out on the outskirts of the village of Kajan in the Penjwin subdistrict in Southern Kurdistan, causing significant damage to forests and nature in the border area.

The Directorate of Forests and Environment in Sulaymaniyah, Southern Kurdistan, issued a statement today announcing a fire on the outskirts of the village of Kajan in the Penjwin subdistrict, burning approximately 40 dunams of vegetation and natural forests, causing significant environmental damage in the border area.

The Directorate explained in its statement, published by Roj News Agency, that employees of the Forests and Environment Police Department in Penjwin, in cooperation and coordination with citizen volunteers and environmentalists, exerted great efforts and were able to control the fire after a long struggle.

It noted that the cause of the fire remains unknown, and that investigations and follow-up into the incident are ongoing.

Over the past few months, the densely forested border areas of Southern Kurdistan have been subjected to several fires, most of which were caused by shelling by Turkish occupation forces, while others were caused by natural causes related to high temperatures.
