Shemam villagers control fire in barley crop caused by short circuit

A fire broke out on Thursday in a barley field in Shemam village, south of Jel Aga city, following an electrical fault at a power transformer located adjacent to the agricultural land. The malfunction caused sparks to fly, which ignited the crop and sparked the blaze.

As soon as the fire broke out, the villagers immediately stepped in, using wet burlap bags and other makeshift tools to contain the flames until the firefighting teams arrived at the scene.

According to several villagers, swift intervention helped control the fire and prevent it from spreading to larger areas of agricultural land; the affected area amounted to less than one dunm of barley crop.

Upon arriving at the scene, the firefighting teams began cooling the area and verifying that the fire had been completely extinguished to prevent any recurrence. They also contacted electrical repair crews to address the fault that had caused the fire outbreak.

As part of preventive measures, the villagers agreed to clear the area around the power substation of dry weeds, thorns, and flammable plants, aiming to minimize the risk of such incidents recurring and protect agricultural crops during the harvest season.

This incident occurs at a time when temperatures in the region are rising, increasing the likelihood of agricultural fires and necessitating additional preventive measures to protect crops.
