It particularly condemns the horrific massacre perpetrated by the forces of the Syrian regime and its allies in the villages of Dahla and Jadida Bakara, eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, at dawn on Friday, August 9, 2024.

That barbaric aggression claimed the lives of 11 martyrs, in which most of them were children and women. It represents a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. This criminal act reflects the Syrian regime and its supporters’ insistence on undermining efforts to stabilize and restore security in the region. It directly opposes the international community’s will.

The SDC condemns this heinous crime in the strongest terms and holds the regime and its allies fully responsible for the crime’s consequences. It warns strongly against the dangers of continuing this aggressive approach, which threatens the future of the political process and the security of the entire region.

The regime’s commission of this massacre comes as a result of its repeated failure to control Deir ez-Zor, confirming that its aggressive policies no longer deceive anyone. The cohesion and solidarity of the Syrian components and tribes plays a crucial role against these brutal and barbaric attacks and the sedition led by the regime and its proxy forces. It will only increase our strength and steadfastness in defending the unity of Syrian territory and preserving the dignity of the Syrian people.

The SDC calls on the international community to take immediate and decisive action to fulfill its moral and legal responsibilities to protect Syrian civilians. It demands the exertion of maximum pressure on the regime and its supporters to halt their aggression. They should commit to a political solution path in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, foremost among them UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The SDC emphasizes the urgent need to activate international accountability mechanisms to ensure that perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity are not allowed to go unpunished. It confirms the pursuit of justice for the casualties of the Syrian conflict.

The SDC reaffirms its steadfast commitment to preserving the unity of Syria, its land and people. Also, it calls on all national and democratic powers to unite their ranks in the face of plots aimed at undermining stability and reigniting conflicts.

Additionally, the SDC extends its deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and wishes a speedy recovery to the wounded. It affirms its continued peaceful struggle for a democratic, decentralized, and pluralistic Syria that guarantees the rights of all its components and preserves the dignity of all its citizens.
