SDC: Recent escalation in Syria serves enemies of peace

The SDC reaffirmed that protecting the lives of Syrian civilians, regardless of their affiliations, remains an absolute priority. It categorically rejected any justifications for escalating violence against civilians or local institutions and urged the Damascus government to act responsibly and prioritize national interests in response to these critical developments.

The Council strongly condemned the targeting of civilians and local security forces, labeling such acts as blatant violations of civil peace that must be halted immediately. It further called for addressing the root causes of tensions through serious and responsible dialogue—eschewing militarization and sectarian incitement—while focusing on national interests to prevent a recurrence of the painful experiences that have afflicted Syria and its neighbors.

Reiterating that civil peace is the cornerstone of any stable and secure future, the SDC warned that all forms of violence and sectarian provocation would only deepen divisions and prolong suffering. The Council called on all Syrians to reject discord and hate speech, foster social cohesion, and work toward building bridges of dialogue and mutual understanding.

The SDC cautioned that the significant escalation underway threatens to drag Syria back into turmoil, playing into the hands of peace’s adversaries while undermining national security and unity. It urged all political actors to engage in a genuine national dialogue to reach a comprehensive political solution.

The Council also emphasized the necessity of establishing a transitional justice mechanism to hold perpetrators of crimes accountable and set a clear path toward national reconciliation, ensuring that justice is achieved alongside a comprehensive national peace process. Furthermore, it warned against attempts by regional powers to exploit Syria’s internal conflict, stressing that the international community's silence is both unjustified and unacceptable.

The SDC called on the United Nations and the Security Council to adopt firmer and more decisive positions by issuing a binding resolution for a nationwide ceasefire and supporting an inclusive and effective political process that ensures stability and an end to the cycle of violence.
