Scabies outbreak and medical neglect reported in Adra Prison

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, health conditions in facilities run by the Syrian Interim Government have reached a critical level. Prisoners in Adra are reportedly being denied medical treatment and subjected to systematic harsh punishment under inhumane conditions.

The report further indicates that prison authorities concealed several inmates in solitary confinement during a visit by the International Committee of the Red Cross, preventing the delegation from assessing the actual conditions of detainees.

Sources confirmed that many prisoners have been subjected to severe torture inside solitary cells, resulting in broken ribs and the loss of teeth due to brutal beatings.

Inmates in Adra and Hama Central Prisons are also being forced into hard labor, carrying out prison renovations including tile removal, wall demolition, and material transport for over 12 hours daily under degrading circumstances.

Reports highlight that detainees are facing both physical and psychological abuse and are deprived of basic nutrition, with meals insufficient to sustain them for a single day—sometimes only one meal is distributed every two days.

More than 8,000 individuals are estimated to be held across government-controlled prisons in Hama, Homs, Adra, Harem, Afrin, and Al-Ra’i—most detained for at least nine months without formal charges or judicial review, in what rights groups describe as arbitrary detention.

There are also consistent accounts of widespread extortion, as prison administrations allegedly coerce families of detainees into paying bribes to improve detention conditions, allow food delivery, or secure the release of relatives.

Human rights organizations have called for an urgent international intervention to open all detention centers to independent human rights committees, ensure transparent monitoring, and secure the release of all prisoners not implicated in violent crimes, in accordance with due legal processes.
