Qamishlo's centenary celebrations begin with banners reviving it's memory

As part of preparations for the centenary celebration of the founding of Qamishlo in the Jazira region, scheduled for August 20, 2026, the People's Municipality has begun installing banners in several areas across the city.

The banners have been placed at the city's entrances, main streets, as well as several public institutions and offices, in a move aimed at creating a festive atmosphere across the city to mark the 100th anniversary of its founding.

The banners feature two designs that reflect different stages of Qamishlo's history. The first design includes images of wheat ears and Azadi Park, with the number "100 years" placed between them, alongside a picture of the Great Qamishlo Mosque and a statue of martyr Youssef Gello, a nationally recognized figure known as "the Dean of Martyrs," who was killed along with his two grandsons, Mazloum and Mohammed Gello, on November 9, 2021.

The second design showcases two stages from the city's history. The first documents the early days of Qamishlo's establishment in 1926, when it was a village consisting of mud-brick houses surrounded by agricultural lands. The second part presents the city's appearance in 2026, highlighting the urban development and modern construction it has witnessed.

The banners carry the phrase "Yesterday… Today… The Future," along with the slogan "Qamishlo… The Century That Created a City."

These activities come alongside other events taking place in the city in preparation for the occasion. On August 13, a large-scale cleaning campaign was launched with the participation of residents and members of institutions, aiming to improve services and maintain the city's cleanliness under the slogan "Qamishlo, the City of Cleanliness."

In the same context, the People's Municipality in Qamishlo formed a preparatory committee to develop a celebration program documenting the city's history and journey since its founding a century ago.

Qamishlo is scheduled to host a major celebration on August 20 at Azadi Park, marking the 100th anniversary of the city's founding.
