PYD Women’s Council in Tal Tamr condemns Sweida massacres, calls for solidarity

The Women’s Council issued a public statement today in Tal Tamr, Jazira Canton, denouncing the massacres targeting civilians in Sweida, particularly members of the Druze community. The council held local and regional actors involved in the Syrian conflict responsible for the escalation of violence and the targeting of unarmed residents.

The statement was read by Bouza Al-Saleh, a member of the PYD Women’s Committee, in front of the party's center in downtown Tal Tamr. The event was attended by several women from various organizations and institutions, including representatives of civil society organizations.

The statement declared that the PYD Women’s Council strongly condemns the recent massacres in Sweida, including crimes committed against unarmed civilians, sexual violence against women, and violations against the elderly and religious elders. It emphasized that such acts aim to incite sectarian strife, destabilize the region, spread fear and chaos, and deny religious communities their right to practice their faith freely.

The statement added, “The Druze community has a long-standing history in Syria, and therefore deserves to be granted its rights, to live in safety, and to preserve its unique identity regardless of the sects or beliefs they follow, which are rightful demands that must be fulfilled.”

In conclusion, the statement called on the United Nations and humanitarian and human rights organizations to intervene urgently, stop the bloodshed, hold the perpetrators accountable, launch necessary investigations, and take serious and effective measures to ensure justice is served.
