Protest in Sweida demands political rights

Residents of Sweida held a protest despite harsh weather conditions, calling for the right to self-determination, an international investigation into alleged crimes, condemnation of arrests, lifting the siege, opening a crossing, and building alliances with democratic countries.

A number of residents in Sweida organized a protest today despite severe weather, reaffirming a set of demands they said relate to the rights of the province’s population and their political future.

During the protest, participants raised banners expressing their demands, including the right of self-determination for the people of Sweida and the opening of an international investigation into alleged violations against civilians through an independent international inquiry committee.

Protesters also called for condemning the interim government over what they described as arrests targeting civilians, in addition to repeated kidnapping incidents reported in the region.

Some banners stressed that the people of Sweida remain firm in their position, including slogans reading, “The authentic Druze people will not go backward.”

Protesters also called for lifting the siege on Sweida and opening a crossing with Israel, while expressing their willingness to build alliances with democratic countries, according to the slogans raised during the protest.
