Protest in Qamishlo demands payment of pensions, lower fuel prices

A number of residents of Qamishlo in the Jazira region held a protest outside the district directorate this morning, objecting to delays in the payment of employees’ and retirees’ salaries and demanding action to address rising fuel prices and ensure fuel supplies, amid difficult economic conditions and rising prices of many basic commodities.

During the protest, participants held banners expressing their demands, stressing that salary delays are occurring as living costs continue to rise, while higher fuel prices, particularly diesel prices, have affected various aspects of life, including transportation, businesses and services.

Jihan Hussam, director of the district, met with the protesters and listened to their demands and complaints. She said work is underway to follow up on the issue of outstanding payments and to seek to secure the delayed salaries of retirees and employees.

She explained that the high price and shortage of diesel, as well as the lack of electricity, were among the key issues discussed during a meeting between the General Commander Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, and Syrian transitional government President Ahmed al-Sharaa. She stressed the importance of addressing these issues given their direct impact on people’s lives.

Regarding the delayed salaries, Jihan Hussam said she will visit the post offices in Qamishlo and Amuda tomorrow to follow up on the salaries of employees and retirees, determine the reasons for the delays and work toward resolving the issue.

The protest comes amid growing public demands to improve living conditions, ensure the regular payment of salaries, address rising fuel prices and secure electricity supplies in order to ease the economic burden on residents.
