Professors at Syrian Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts halt teaching over Ignored Demands

The crisis escalated as 65 professors and lecturers refused to start the new academic year, citing the Ministry of Culture’s disregard for their basic demands regarding the educational and logistical reality at the institute.

The professors had sent an official letter to the ministry on August 7, highlighting obstacles that threaten the educational process and affirming their commitment to continuing it while ensuring the dignity of the teaching staff. However, the lack of response and the appointment of a new dean from outside the teaching body, without internal elections, were seen as escalatory measures that heightened the crisis.

The protesters indicated that the ministry’s continued policy of “neglect and oversight” over academic decisions has weakened their trust in the institution. They stressed that the absence of serious dialogue and the ignoring of legitimate demands threatens the institute’s reputation, which has for decades produced outstanding artistic talents.

The professors concluded their statement by emphasizing that their return to teaching depends on the provision of decent working conditions and a democratic environment that ensures their participation in decision-making within the institute.
