Politician confirms isolation of Abdullah Ocalan undermines prospects for peace in Turkey

Debate continues over the future of the peace process and democratic society in Turkey, particularly in light of the ongoing isolation imposed on Abdullah Ocalan, his role in any potential negotiations, and whether these restrictions affect the likelihood of reaching a political settlement.

In this context, Professor of Political Studies Dr. Medhat Hammad told our agency that creating appropriate conditions both in terms of living circumstances and political engagement for Abdullah Ocalan by the Turkish authorities is essential. He added that this issue is fundamental, noting that no negotiation process can succeed if one of the parties is effectively negotiating with itself or operating under constraints that limit its role and mobility.

Hammad explained that “Ocalan has declared his abandonment of the armed struggle in exchange for achieving peace and ensuring that the Kurds obtain their legitimate rights across various domains.” He described this step as “a positive one, reflecting a genuine shift toward peaceful methods and dialogue, whether at the national level or among different societal components, in a way that guarantees the rights of all parties.”

He added that the success of any peace process requires that no party be politically constrained or unable to communicate and participate effectively. He stressed that “providing channels of communication, whether with the Turkish government or with legitimate political forces within the country would help create a suitable environment for achieving the desired peace."

Hammad warned that continued isolation could lead to serious negative consequences, beginning with frustration and potentially escalating to despair, which might result in “a reconsideration of the decision to abandon armed struggle.” He noted that a worsening of such sentiments could open the door to a return to armed resistance, contradicting the goal of achieving peace.

Regarding granting Abdullah Ocalan full freedom, Hammad said it “should not be viewed as a precondition for launching a peace process, but rather as a gesture of goodwill by the Turkish government, notwithstanding his entitlement under international law.” He emphasized that such a step would help build trust, reinforce a peaceful approach, and reassure the public, thereby contributing to a more stable political and social environment that supports the prospects for a genuine and lasting peace.
