people of Derbasiya complain about high prices

Some citizens of the city of Derbasiya stated their discontent about the rising prices of fuel and its effects, which have had an impact on many basic services and caused a deterioration in the economic situation and standard of living of the citizens. This in light of low wages, a lack of employment opportunities, and decline in purchasing power.

In this regard, citizen Ahmed Youssef said that prices continue to increase in an unstable way, and this causes pressure on both citizens and market sellers. The increase in diesel prices has led to an increase in the prices of goods because of the rising costs of procurement.

He added that monthly income is no longer sufficient to cover basic living expenses, as employees can now only afford a limited portion of their families' needs, while meat and medical treatment have become unaffordable for many.

For his part, citizen Mohammed Suleiman said that the economic situation in the region and Syria in general is becoming increasingly difficult due to declining salaries. The rising prices of diesel fuel, transportation costs, and customs duties have also led to increased prices for goods and food.

He added that a family that could meet its needs on $200 a month can no longer do so, even with $400. Even families with more than one working member are struggling to cover living expenses.

In his turn, citizen Mahmoud Eiso explained that living conditions have reached a critical stage, as most citizens work long hours without being able to secure their basic needs, given the low salaries and high cost of living. This has forced many families to limit themselves to purchasing only the bare necessities.

Khaled Ma'mou, from the village of Jurni Rash in the countryside of Darbasiyah, said that the wave of inflation is not new, but it has worsened recently, which has increased the economic pressure on citizens.

For his part, Osman Haj Nayef confirmed that the price increases included various basic commodities, including oil, sugar, vegetables, fruits, bread and fuels, and that the price of a bundle of bread rose from two thousand Syrian pounds to three thousand pounds, which increased the living burdens on families.

He went further to explain that low incomes together with the increasing cost of living have resulted in reduced purchasing power and inability to meet basic requirements.

He urged the concerned authority to put in place measures aimed at easing the burden of the citizens, particularly those who earn little income and workers whose daily income does not exceed 50,000 Syrian pounds.

Othman Ma'mou, the citizen, highlighted that the continuing increase in prices together with the decreasing value of Syrian pound against the dollar have directly affected local markets by causing price increases in different commodities, where prices range from store to store, together with low employment opportunities and poor business transactions.

He pointed out that farmers are also suffering from the increased prices of fuel and agricultural input, where incomes from harvest are not enough to meet costs.

He indicated that increased prices of clothing have worsened the suffering of the local population, who cannot afford their basic necessities anymore.

Ma’mou also stated that if the current situation continued, the problem would get worse and lead to higher rates of emigration, particularly youth.

Citizens appealed to the concerned authorities to take immediate action to solve the economic crisis through improving salaries and income levels to be in line with the steep rise in prices.
