Pedersen: escalation in number of Syrian regions is worrying

The United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, said in a closed session of the Security Council that the escalation in a number of Syrian regions is a matter of concern, according to what was reported by the media. 

He pointed out that "the basic principles of Security Council Resolution 2254 enjoy broad agreement."

Pedersen explained: "The political transition must be in Syria's hands, ensuring reliable, non-sectarian governance, constitutional reform, fair elections, and women's participation."

Last week, Pedersen called for organizing “free and fair” elections with the end of the transitional phase in Syria, after about three months, hoping at the same time for a political solution with the Kurdish Autonomous Administration.

On Wednesday, several Syrian cities, including Latakia, Tartous, Homs, and Jableh, witnessed demonstrations and disturbances, and gunfire was heard in some of them, after a video clip spread on social media sites, without specifying the time it was taken, showing a fire inside the shrine of a religious symbol of the Alawite sect in the city of Aleppo, with the presence of armed men roam inside, in addition to burning a Christmas tree in Hama.

In a related context, since December 8, the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries have launched attacks against the area of ​​Tishreen Dam and Qarquzaq Bridge, and are also systematically bombing populated villages along the border strip in the Al-Jazira and Euphrates Cantons
