Peace process requires release of leader Abdullah Ocalan
Residents of the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood and displaced people from Afrin have affirmed that the first step in activating the peace process lies in the release of the leader Abdullah Ocalan, emphasizing that the struggle continues to fulfill the aspirations of the Kurdish people.

Leader Abdullah Ocalan has been imprisoned in Imrali for more than 25 years, during which he has tirelessly worked to preserve Kurdish identity and promote the model of a Democratic Nation as a sustainable solution to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Despite his declaration of a new phase through the “Call for Peace and a Democratic Society” on February 27—where he assumed historical responsibility to ensure the success of this initiative—the Turkish state has failed to take tangible steps in support of it.
The physical freedom of Abdullah Ocalan is considered a fundamental prerequisite for the success of the peace process. In this context, Hassan Jameel, a resident of Sheikh Maqsoud, expressed his hopes, stating: “We want our leader to be released from the prison. With our determination, we will achieve this, because he is the most capable of leading peace efforts. Without his physical freedom, peace will never be achieved.”
Jameel added: “To succeed in the initiative for peace and democratic society launched by the leader on February 27, the Turkish state must understand that the first step in activating the peace process lies in releasing Abdullah Ocalan. It also requires strengthening relations with him and establishing a culture of dialogue, instead of pursuing aggressive policies and imposing sanctions.”
Feryal Mohammed Khalil explained: “The leader, who has fulfilled his historical duties to the fullest, must be released. He has waged a long struggle, and we will not accept any transgressions by the occupying Turkish state against the call he has issued. Turkey must act responsibly to reflect a genuine commitment to peace.”
Eighty-year-old Koli Musa Topal expressed her longing to hear news of the leader’s release and pointed to the obstacles to achieving freedom due to Turkish policies.
For her part, Zakia Mohammed emphasized Abdullah Ocalan’s role in fostering political and societal awareness and affirmed that the struggle continues to achieve the aspirations of the Kurdish people.
