PCCWS condemns attack on two towns in Latakia

The PCCWS issued a statement today denouncing the “blatant violation” carried out by the transitional government of Syria and its security apparatus in the towns of Abda and Duwair Abda and their surroundings in the Jableh countryside of Latakia.

 The council emphasized that these violations contravene international principles and norms, particularly the principles of proportionality and distinction.

The statement said that “the use of fire and manpower was disproportionate to the declared threat, causing widespread intimidation among residents, damage to their property, and resulting in civilian casualties, including at least one man with a disability.”

The council added that “the partial withdrawal of some public security personnel does not absolve them of responsibility, holding them fully accountable for the continuation of provocations or the instigation of clashes and the resulting human and material losses.”

The council stressed that any future attacks would be met with large peaceful demonstrations, urging the international community to assume its responsibilities in providing international protection for civilians and working toward establishing a federal system of governance as the broadest guarantee of rights and duties.
