NUJ calls for Accountability in killings of journalists

The International Federation of Journalists condemned the targeting of two female journalists (Gulestan Tara, Hîro Bahadin) in a village in Sulaymaniyah Governorate in Southern Kurdistan, and considered it a "crime" that requires "opening an investigation and holding the perpetrators accountable."

The statement pointed out that this is not the first time that journalists in Southern Kurdistan have been targeted, as the crew of the Çira Media Foundation, which specializes in Yazidi affairs, was targeted on July 8 by drones in Shengal, which led to the death of journalist Murad Mirza Ibrahim and the injury of journalist Medya Hassan.

The International Federation of Journalists called for a swift investigation into the killing of the two journalists and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

The drone attack is not the first targeting journalists in the Kurdistan region, and has been described by Anthony Bellanger, IFJ general secretary, as reflecting “the extreme dangers faced by journalists working in conflict zones and highlights the urgent need for immediate measures to ensure their safety and hold those responsible for these crimes accountable.”
