NE Syria women’s delegation meets Bethnahrin Women’s Union in Switzerland

Continuing its European tour, the delegation from North and East Syria held a meeting yesterday evening with members of the Bethnahrin Women’s Union in Switzerland. The two sides exchanged views on the situation of Syrian women and the obstacles confronting them.

During the meeting, the delegation highlighted the gains made by women in North and East Syria under the Autonomous Administration, including their active participation in political, diplomatic, and social spheres, while emphasizing the importance of coexistence among the region’s communities.

The discussion also addressed the risks and challenges faced by women in areas under the control of the Syrian transitional government, with both sides underscoring the need to enhance cooperation between women’s organizations to confront these challenges and secure rights.

Bethnahrin represents a political and social framework for the Syriac (Assyrian–Chaldean–Aramean) people, working to advance their national and cultural rights, while also promoting women’s participation through the Bethnahrin Women’s Union and its councils both inside the region and in the diaspora, including its Swiss branch.

This meeting came as part of a European tour launched by the delegation on September 6, which has included visits to France, Germany, and Switzerland. The delegation has met with political, parliamentary, and women’s figures to discuss women’s issues and the humanitarian situation in Syria, in addition to the threat of ISIS resurgence and pathways toward building a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized Syria.

The delegation includes Amina Omar, Executive Member of the Women’s Council in North and East Syria; Mona Youssef, Spokeswoman for the Syrian Women’s Council; Shahrazad al-Jassem, Spokeswoman for the Zenobia Women’s Gathering; Jian Hussein, Member of the Coordination of Kongra Star; and Georgette Barsoum, Head of the Syriac Women’s Union. Their European tour remains ongoing.
