Narges Mohammadi’s defense committee reported on Sunday that the activist had been released on bail and transferred to a hospital in Tehran for treatment.

“After ten days in a hospital in Zanjan (northern Iran), Narges Mohammadi was granted a suspended sentence on exorbitant bail,” the committee said in a post on the X platform, adding that she was transported by ambulance to Tehran “to receive treatment from her own medical team.”

In February, the committee said that Mohammadi had been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. The Nobel Committee at the time called on Tehran to release her immediately.

She was arrested in December after condemning the death of lawyer Khosrow Ali Kordi. A prosecutor told reporters at the time that she had made provocative statements during Ali Kordi’s memorial service.

Mohammadi, 54, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while imprisoned for her campaign to promote women’s rights and abolish the death penalty. She suffered a heart attack two weeks ago.
