Narges Mohammadi hospitalized after being abused

The family of women's rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi told a foundation bearing her name that she was taken to a hospital emergency room twice after sustaining injuries during her arrest on December 12.

Mohammadi is considered a leading activist for women's rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while imprisoned, following a campaign that spanned nearly three decades.

The activist was re-arrested during a commemoration marking one week since the death of lawyer Khesrow Ali Kurdi, who was found dead in his office last week.

The Narges Foundation, run by her family, said that Mohammadi contacted them on Sunday evening, confirming that her health status was poor due to the beatings she had exposed to.

Mohammadi had been released from Tehran's Evin Prison last December after her sentence was suspended for medical reasons.

She told her family that she was accused of "collaborating with the Israeli government" and had received death threats from Iranian authorities, prompting her to instruct her legal team to file a formal complaint against the security agency holding her and the violent manner in which she was arrested.

There has been no official comment yet from Iranian authorities.
