Mohammad Mousa: Kurdish unity is only real defense

Mohammad Mousa, Secretary-General of the Kurdish Left Party in Syria, said: “Today, more than ever, the Kurdish people must unite, and protect one another amid ongoing attacks. 

We know that international powers act according to their own interests, and that regional powers such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar—who were supposed to distance themselves from ties with al-Jolani—have instead drawn closer to him. As for the Turkish state, it is one of the occupying states of Kurdistan, and naturally it has never been an ally to us. In this situation, the factor we must rely on is our existence and our unity. The Kurdish movements and parties in Rojava, Bakur, Bashur, and Rojhilat represent a great opportunity; let us strengthen our solidarity within this opportunity. Our defense lies in our unity.”

In another context, Mousa commented on Decree No. 13 issued by the head of the interim government, Ahmad al-Shara, concerning the Kurds and Kurdish culture, explaining that it was issued for propaganda purposes by the interim government and contains nothing new in substance. He added: “The main objective of issuing this decree is to escalate disagreements among Kurdish political movements, create confusion and fractures, and attract some parties to its side in an attempt to show that it has offered something to the Kurds.”

Mousa pointed out that the points mentioned in the decree resemble a message directed at the Kurdish people and external parties, implying they want to say to the Kurdish people: “I am not against you; one time you are my eyes, another time you are my heart,” yet they do nothing on the ground.

Mousa also noted that the decree did not clarify the status of the Kurdish language as an official language or the mechanism for ensuring its continuity, nor did it seriously address the issue of the stateless (unregistered) people, which has remained unresolved since the 1962 census.

He further criticized the interim government’s handling of the Kurdish delegation formed on April 26, 2025, affirming that it did not receive a welcoming response, and that the government limits its negotiations to the Syrian Democratic Forces solely on the military level.

He added that al-Shara endorsed the March 10 and April 1 agreements related to Sheikh Maqsoud, al-Ashrafiya, and Bani Zaid, areas that witnessed massacres under Turkish cover.
