Israeli Media: Tel Aviv monitors ISIS in Syria

The Israeli website Walla stated that Israeli army forces last week detained a suspect in southern Syria who is believed to have been operating on behalf of ISIS with the aim of carrying out attacks against the Israeli army.

According to the report, the operation was carried out by the 52nd Battalion of the Golan Brigade (474), in cooperation with field investigators from Unit 504. The suspect was transferred into Israel for interrogation, and his plans were thwarted after weapons and military equipment were discovered and confiscated during the operation.

The suspect was arrested in the town of Rafid, located south of the Golan Heights, an area of strategic importance, as it could allow hostile elements to gather intelligence on Israeli army movements and infiltration routes into Israel.

Israeli army assessments indicate that ISIS has not left Syria but has instead changed its patterns of activity and modes of deployment, exploiting security vacuums resulting from the weak control of the transitional government over certain areas, particularly in the east of the country and the Syrian desert.

The website confirmed that ISIS has not yet succeeded in establishing a foothold in southern Syria and remains in a phase of “testing the waters” and building an initial infrastructure.
