A senior Israeli official confirmed that an attempt to reach a security agreement between Israel and Syria had failed, noting that negotiations between the two sides faced difficulties that prevented the agreement from being concluded.

According to Israeli media reports, the official said that Israel and Syria had attempted to reach a security understanding, “but it ultimately failed,” explaining that one of the factors that complicated the negotiations was the easing of sanctions imposed on Syria.

He added that the lifting of some sanctions on Damascus had, in his view, reduced its willingness to reach a security agreement with Israel, saying that “Syria’s desire to reach such an agreement diminished after some of the sanctions against it were lifted.
