Iraq, U.S. hold talks on counterterrorism and al-Hol Camp issue

According to a statement from Iraq’s National Security Advisory, the two sides discussed ways to further develop relations between Iraq and the United States in a manner that serves and strengthens their mutual interests, as well as the continuation of joint cooperation and the exchange of expertise and information in the field of counterterrorism.

During the meeting, al-Araji affirmed that “the Iraqi government remains committed to engaging with all countries in the world in ways that advance Iraq’s security and economic interests and enhance cooperation in the field of development.” He added that “the strategic relationship with the United States serves both nations and reinforces their shared interests.”

Al-Araji also expressed his appreciation to the countries that have repatriated their nationals from al-Hol camp, commending the success of the recent conference in New York addressing this issue.

He emphasized that Iraq’s goal is to “close al-Hol camp completely, in order to ensure lasting security and stability in the region and the world.”

For its part, the U.S. delegation praised the Iraqi government’s efforts to repatriate Iraqi families from al-Hol camp, rehabilitate them, and reintegrate them into society.
