Iran arrests Kurdish activist; participated in March 8 celebrations

Iranian authorities have arrested a Kurdish activist in the city of Senna in Eastern Kurdistan for participating in a celebration marking International Women's Day.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Organization reported that Kurdish activist Soma Mohammad Razai was subjected to harassment by the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence, where the activist was taken to a prison without any legal warrant.

The organization quoted eyewitnesses as saying that security forces raided several shops in the Almasi market in the city of Senna in Eastern Kurdistan, where the activist was found, and she was arrested illegally.

While local sources confirmed that the direct reason for the arrest was the activist's prominent role in the celebrations organized on the occasion of International Women's Day, which falls on March 8 of each year, which the authorities considered a challenge to their repressive policies.

Wasuma Razai, a well-known social and political activist, has a long history of defending Kurdish women’s rights and gender equality, and has been subjected to numerous threats due to her political positions and role in promoting human rights in Kurdistan.
