“Intellectuals must promote unity before politicians”

The body of Kurdish poet and journalist Ahmad Husseini was laid to rest on Saturday, March 28, in his hometown of Amuda, after he passed away in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, on March 10.

A condolence ceremony for Ahmad Husseini was held at the Hawri Center for Culture and Arts in the city of Amuda in the Jazira region. Several intellectuals spoke to the ANHA agency about his efforts toward Kurdish unity and its significance.

In this context, the spokesperson for the Rojava Union of Intellectuals (HRRK), Munir Sheikhy, spoke about Husseini’s life and his activities in Europe and across Northern and Southern Kurdistan, as well as his work in Rojava.

Sheikhy said: “People in Northern and Southern Kurdistan greatly loved Ahmad Husseini. In addition to his literary work, he possessed a national spirit connected to the sacred efforts across the four parts of Kurdistan. He did not differentiate between political currents; rather, he respected all political sides, as well as the efforts and sacrifices that were made. He left behind a national legacy for Kurdish culture, and when new generations read his poetry, they will feel this spirit within it.”

Munir Sheikhy explained that Ahmad Husseini used to say they came to Rojava to establish a framework for intellectuals, stressing that “we cannot demand unity from political parties unless we take such a step ourselves before the politicians.”

On the importance of Kurdish unity, Sheikhy added: “The Kurdish people are among the strongest and most vibrant peoples, possessing a solid national spirit. For this reason, the Kurdish people will be able to lead a new thought in this century. We believe this will be the century of the Kurdish people, and its signs are already evident.”

For her part, the co-chair of the Culture Authority in Jazira, Ferial Joly, said that news of Ahmad Husseini’s passing brought sorrow to all Kurds. She added: “He was a Kurdish figure who struggled for Kurdish rights and embodied the unity of the Kurdish people through his feelings and his poetry.”
