Human Rights Organization calls to end violence in Syria

on Sunday, a statement was delivered by the Human Rights Organization in Syria on the occasion of the International Day of Peace, in front of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees' (UNHCR) building in Qamishlo, in the presence of representatives of civil society organizations.

Many countries around the world celebrate the International Day of Peace on September 21, including Turkey, for historical and political reasons linked to leftist and socialist movements worldwide, not only based on the UN resolution designating September 21 as an official day of peace.

The statement was delivered by Avin Jum'a, the administrator of the Human Rights Organization in Syria, who made clear that achieving peace is not only a global responsibility, but rather the responsibility of every individual, institution, and organization. She said, "In today's world, where conflicts are increasing and civilians are suffering, the achievement of international peace has become a loftier and more important goal than ever before."

The statement pointed to the loss of the dialogue language and trust, the prevalence of hate speech and discrimination, and the manipulation of religion, sectarianism, and nationalism as a weapon that threatens the social fabric and civil and global peace.

The statement noted, "To achieve peace, we must liberate ourselves from the language of violence and force and resort to the language of understanding and dialogue to find solutions to problems and conflicts. Any other approach will only bring suffering to individuals and communities."

The Syrian Human Rights Organization believes that the International Day of Peace, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, is an opportunity to build a culture of peace by working together to create the conditions that allow reaching peaceful solutions at all levels.

The statement affirmed, "We join all the peoples of the world in celebrating this day, which calls for the rejection of violence and hatred, and clearly calls for a ceasefire and the adoption of dialogue as the basis for building society and resolving disputes. Peace enables the spread of public freedoms, the achievement of justice for all, and the avoidance of the war scourges and violence actions that violate human rights and dignity."

The statement emphasized respect for the rule of law and support for efforts aimed at spreading awareness of peace, democracy, and human rights, stating, "Our goal is to end the cycle of violence that Syria has been experiencing for years, which has led to the destruction of the country, the displacement of its people, and the tearing apart of the Syrian national fabric."

The statement called on all regional and international powers and parties concerned with the Syrian issue to work diligently to support stability in Syria and go forward with peaceful political solutions. It stated, "There must be an immediate cessation of all acts of violence and killing, a return to peaceful solutions under UN supervision, and an achievement of political transition in accordance with UN Resolution 2254 with the participation of all Syrians."

The statement also called for serious efforts in order to return all displaced Syrians to their homes under international guarantees, prevent the recurrence of violations against them, compensate them for their losses, and hold accountable those who committed crimes that constitute war crimes during the ongoing armed conflict.
