Germany rejects most asylum applications for Syrians

Germany declared that it is currently turning down the majority of new asylum requests from Syrian applicants, according to its response to a parliamentary inquiry.

According to DW, in an official response to a parliamentary inquiry on Syrian refugees, the German government confirmed that most Syrian asylum applications are currently being rejected.

According to data from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, only 5.3% of Syrians whose cases were decided by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in 2025 were granted some form of protection. This includes refugee status, asylum, subsidiary protection, or a ban on deportation.

By contrast, the same authority had approved nearly all Syrian asylum cases or issued deportation bans in 2024, showing a significant shift in how these applications are being handled.

Earlier in April, DW also reported that comments by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, suggesting that around 80% of Syrians living in Germany should return to Syria within three years. These comments sparked widespread political debate and criticism.
