The Union of Intellectuals of Rojava, Kurdistan, organized a lecture today at its headquarters in Qamishlo titled "The Future of the January 29 Agreement," attended by a select group of intellectuals, writers, and those interested in political affairs.

The lecture began with a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs' souls, before Seyhanouk Debo, a member of the General Council of the Democratic Union Party and representative of the Autonomous Administration in the Gulf Arab states, presented a political reading of the future of the agreement signed between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the interim government in Syria, addressing the most significant clauses that have been implemented and those that are still pending.

He pointed out at the beginning of his talk that the December 29 agreement is a practical translation of the understandings that took place between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the interim government in Syria, especially after the confrontations that occurred in some areas between the two parties, leading to the signing of the agreement.

He explained that "the autonomous-administration system is based on the social contract approved by the administration, affirming that "the autonomous administration and the Syrian Democratic Forces viewed themselves as part of the Syrian state and the Syrian army."

He also reviewed the agreement signed on August 30, 2020, indicating that one of its main points was discussing the mechanism for the Syrian Democratic Forces to join the Syrian army.

He affirmed that "the claim of the end of autonomous administration is incorrect," pointing to progress in the integration file, whether in the education sector, military institutions, or several other institutions.

He added that the Kurdish language should be an official language in the country, noting that no practical steps have been taken so far to achieve this in reality.

He also touched on the discussions related to the Women's Protection Units and ways to maintain their structure and military role.

In a related context, he addressed the ongoing conflicts in the region and their repercussions on the Middle East and the global system, considering that major transformations in the international system begin in the Middle East, as it is the arena most affected by these changes.

He confirmed that the January 29 agreement came in response to the political and military reality imposed by the field developments, pointing out that the war on Iran and the regional changes contributed to pushing toward its signing.

In his discussion about the unimplemented items, he clarified that "the Kurdish issue remains one of the most prominent postponed files, as no practical steps have been taken regarding it so far," adding that "the presence of a number of Kurdish MPs in parliament cannot be considered a true representation of the Kurdish issue or a guaranty of the rights of the Kurdish people."

The lecture concluded with an open discussion, during which attendees raised several questions and comments regarding the future of the agreement and the prospects for implementing its provisions.
