European Union demands security guarantees, calls for participation of all components in Syria

The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, emphasized the need for comprehensive security guarantees regarding the situation in Syria from the new authority, stressing the importance of ensuring effective participation of all components in building a genuine democratic process. 

 Kaja Kallas said in a special statement to "Asharq" website that "there are no guarantees in Syria yet," pointing out that the reason for this is the absence of understandings and guarantees among various international and regional parties.

 The European official, who succeeded Josep Borrell and previously held the position of Prime Minister of her country, Estonia, revealed upcoming European efforts in the coming weeks and days to achieve goals that contribute to steering the situation in Syria towards what she considers the "right direction."

 And emphasized the urgent need to make significant efforts with regional actors to obtain comprehensive security guarantees from the new leadership in Syria, as well as to ensure effective participation of all minorities and to build a genuine democratic process.

 Kaja Kallas expressed her understanding of the European concern over the sudden changes in Syria, noting that Europe shares other countries' worries about the situation in Syria, which reflects the increasing challenges facing the region in light of these developments.

 The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, confirmed in statements on Wednesday that "the old Syria has disappeared, but the new Syria has not yet been born," pointing out that the upcoming period will be crucial in shaping the country's future, while emphasizing the European role in this process.
