Élysée predicts Macron-Shara'a meeting by referring to its content

The Élysée Palace revealed what France will demand of the Damascus government during its hosting of the latter's president, stating: "It will demand the building of a new Syria free, stable, and sovereign Syria that respects all components of Syrian society."

Agence France-Presse reported, citing the Élysée Palace, that French President Emmanuel Macron will receive the president of the Damascus government, Ahmad al-Shara'a, in Paris on Wednesday, on the latter's first visit to Europe.

The French presidency announced that Macron "will reaffirm France's support for building a new Syria free, stable, and sovereign Syria that respects all components of Syrian society."

It added that "this meeting falls within the framework of France's historic commitment to Syrians who aspire to peace and democracy," stressing that Macron will reiterate "his demands of the Syrian government, foremost among them stability in the region, especially Lebanon, as well as the fight against terrorism."

However, the massacres that resulted in the deaths of 1,700 people in the west of the country in March, most of them Alawites, the recent battles between Damascus government forces and Druze militants, and the violations documented by non-governmental organizations will be the most prominent topics that the French president will focus on with his guest, according to observers.
