The source said that the talks were attended by the head of operations directorate in the Israeli army, Major General Oded Basiuk, who met with representatives of the Damascus authority in the presence of Turkish officials.
In a related development, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, following talks with Damascus authority Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani, stated that the Damascus authority seeks peace with Israel and has pledged to work toward a pluralistic society.
It is worth noting that Ahmad Al-Shara’, head of the Damascus authority, stated last week that his government was holding indirect talks with Israel to end its attacks on the country, “so that things do not reach a point where both sides lose control.”
U.S. President Donald Trump met with Al-Shara’ in Saudi Arabia earlier this week. Trump pledged to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, which had been ousted in a military operation led by Al-Shara’, who fled Syria in December.
The White House stated that Trump urged Al-Shara’ to take a series of actions, including normalizing relations with Israel, expelling foreign and Palestinian “terrorists,” and assisting the U.S. in preventing the resurgence of ISIS.
